Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh Share Al Qaeda Recruiter of the Year Honors!

Let us reason together!  There are about 1.6 Billion Muslims.  Of those, more than 150 million are young men between 15 and 25 years old.  What are we saying to them when we stand by and allow the Muslim haters to have the megaphone unchallenged?

The people in this country who want to sell hate are bad enough, but the Glenn Beck radio and TV shows and Rush Limbaugh’s radio show have a global audience.  What are their sponsors thinking?  The title of this article is intended as satire, but it might as well be true.   They are making the recruiting of our enemies easy by their rhetoric.  Any advertiser that would condone this should never hear the end of it.

If they evoke countervailing hatred among only 1 in every million young Muslim men, they still have created quite a large cadre of potential terrorists.  Giving them the benefit of the doubt, and in my opinion the number is much higher, that would still be a cadre of 150 young men.  And that’s assuming the young women have the wisdom not to join in the hatred.  If you combined all of the young people responsible for the September 11th attacks in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania (September 11, 2001), the London bombings (July 7, 2005), the Madrid train attack (March 11, 2004), and the 2008 Mumbai attacks (November 26, 2008), you still will not have reached 150.

This has always been my primary point.  We will not achieve equilibrium of peace in the world while a major part of our body politic foments hatred against about 21% of the world’s population.  I pick on Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh only because they are the noisiest offenders on the world stage.  Some one needs to whisper in their ears that they need to find another way to defend us from our enemies, because what they are doing is counter productive.

Within my lifetime the United States was thanked globally for saving civilization.   Now the haters among us have changed that.  Now it is difficult for most people in the world to understand our motives.   How do we demonstrate that we, the American People, can live in harmony with people of any national origin and religion?  Certainly, we cannot make an exception of the Muslim world, which is 21% of humanity!  Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh in their hate mongering role seem to harbor such an opinion.

Ethnic and religious diversity is the very essence of what makes us American.    In a society like ours, every group immediately adopts good ideas, while bad ideas are rejected by the majority and soon disappear, though they may seem strong for a time.  That is the fundamental basis of the strength of the United States of America.  Yet there is a divisive fear-mongering element among us, who would turn their back on that heritage.  It is time for the rest of us to point out the error in their ways.

I am sometimes accused of being an apologist for Islam.  That is far from the truth!  I will be among the first to say that many things need to change in the Muslim world.  These include the abuse and subjugation of women, and the need to stop human trafficking that occurs in many of the largest Muslim countries.  But we have these same issues in the non-Muslim parts of our American society.  We cannot single out Muslims for criticism if we have not put the rest of our house in order.  We must all work together to fight for the rights of women in Islam and the West.

Beck and Limbaugh, and all of the hatred peddlers, do us a disservice by constantly harping on the tragic terrorist incidents of our recent past.  Yes, they were horrific, and killed thousands of people.  But where is their outrage over the tens of thousands of people that we allow to die on our highways each year, because we don’t adequately control drunk driving?  Few of those miscreants are Muslim!

We need to rethink what is in our best interests as a country.  Beck and Limbaugh have had the megaphone for a long time, and have made themselves rich by playing on fears and prejudices that seem to be inviting a kind of neo fascism.  It is time for the rest of us to stand up and say enough is enough.

One Response to Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh Share Al Qaeda Recruiter of the Year Honors!

  1. Skip Conover says:

The numbers in this article are based on the following assumptions and calculation:

    1.6 Billion Muslims x 65% under 25 years old = 1.04 Billion under 25
    1.04 Billion Muslims under 25 x 45% men = 468 Million Muslim men under 25
    468 Million x 40% between 15 and 25 = 187.2 Million

These assumptions mean that my figure of greater than 150 million young Muslim men between 15 and 25 is on the low end of the assumed range. You can quibble about my assumptions, but you cannot quibble over the fact that there are a lot of them! Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh seem to want to ignore these numbers.
