Crowds and Power – Reviewed

This was Pinar’s first performance since she went into exile and the first time I had seen her perform. She is an exceptional actress and this role was ideally suited to her, giving her a perfect platform to show her extraordinary range. As the only professional actress in the piece, she is the fulcrum of the transformations that take place in the play – her performance was electrifying – and the subject matter of the play, only too close to her own experience.

The play is about autocracy – it doesn’t tell the story of an autocrat, but instead reconstructs how an autocrat comes into being – how the masses invest power in one individual because he or she speaks to their insecurities.
