Religious leaders have tried to guide men into the spiritual world and away from raw instinct since the beginnings of our species. Their efforts have advanced civilizations on a global basis.
Hunger is a natural instinct. In India, long ago, adults slaughtered cattle for their meat as soon as they could. This became a major problem, because Hindus relied on dairy products in their diet and for tilling the fields, and on cow dung as a source of fuel and fertilizer.
Holy men had a solution. They simply made the cow a “holy” being, which protected them from slaughter.
