That “essence of the human spirit” is not always self-evident. Every American will describe it differently, but we know that from the furious cauldron of debate, which is constant and unceasing in our country, the best always merges, while the worst of our ideas are burned away, in a debating process very much like tempering steel. I have lifelong friends, who disagree with me on practically every political topic there is, but we would all gladly stand shoulder to shoulder in a cold and muddy trench in order to defend our country from those who would try to destroy it from outside.
