Reflection on an Anniversary

It seems odd to be talking about the 10th “anniversary” of 9/11, because we have no real closure. Each of us harbors a queasy feeling at the base of our being that says the event is not over. We know … Continue reading

Terror Management Theory: An Interview with Sheldon Solomon, Ph.D.

I am most grateful to Patrick Shen and Greg Bennick, who produced Flight from Death: The Quest for Immortality.  Their movie provided a direction toward many of the views about the Middle East that I hold today, and they pointed me … Continue reading

“Take a Breath” (The Place of Religion in Normal Discourse)

It seems it is often true that when I engage a Muslim in discourse, the topic often morphs into a discussion of religion, and how the West does not understand Islam as a religion of peace.

While I agree that this is an important topic, and one I often emphasize myself, it is not the only topic. Today I criticized an acquaintance for suggesting that people in the West “seek to demolish Islam.” He also said, “Ask God to bring together the Muslims on the truth and make them victorious over their enemies.”

Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh Share Al Qaeda Recruiter of the Year Honors!

The people in this country who want to sell hate are bad enough, but the Glenn Beck radio and TV shows and Rush Limbaugh’s radio show have a global audience. What are their sponsors thinking? The title of this article is intended as satire, but it might as well be true. They are making the recruiting of our enemies easy by their rhetoric. Any advertiser that would condone this should never hear the end of it.

We Fear You!

Many Muslims are bitter about the attitudes of people in the West toward their culture and Islam in general. This bitterness is both justified and not, but in this post I will be discussing ways to change the status quo. Continue reading

Dear Clara (@ Women's Rights in Islam and the West)

I certainly sympathize with your point about not being subjugated. My point in part is that subjugation and abuse of women is a worldwide problem and phenomenon. Many US divorces are brought on by this. In my opinion, Muslim women also do not want to be subjugated, and they are now seeing that women outside the Muslim World are standing up for their rights. This information dissemination cannot be stopped. As this process happens, Muslim women will naturally stand up for their own rights, and the nature of Islam itself will change. But this will take much courage and a very long time. Continue reading
